History of Taumarunui
King Tawhiao in his foresight
throughout the Maori Wars era lay down his hat on a map and this area became known as the King Country. This land became safe for the Maori
who entered for a period of 20 years.
Today we are blessed to recognize and know the last of the Maori Prophets, Alexander Phillips Esq. KBE and QSM. Alexander Phillips
was born, raised and lived in Okahukura just kilometers from Taumarunui township.
A truly dedicated and well loved personage with his wife and family also.
Alexander Graham Bell was grandfather to Sir Alexander Phillips,
who in his time did a lot of work establishing Taumarunui. He became known as the “Father of Taumarunui”
just as colourful as our history.
Taumarunui itself is situated in a little green valley which is very picturesque and green all year round.
We are in a unique situation being only 40 minutes to Tongariro National Park and the mountain with all its activities both winter and summer.
The hunter and fisherman would enjoy time here.
We are also central to the main towns, which gives us access around the area.
